Cardboard Light Diffuser (Fall 2015)
A local cardboard company came to Auburn looking for a way to grow and innovate their business. They asked the question,"What products could we make (besides boxes) with our cardboard?" There are no sketches to go along with this concept because the need for light diffusers was added have way through the semester. This was considered an extra side project.
Market Analysis
As you can see, existing light diffusers are expensive. How can we make a cost efficient light diffuser using cardboard that is precise and easy to use?
Rapid Prototyping
We were able to visit the manufacturer and cut our designs using their equipment. They worked with me on what types of folds and cuts would be best for production. I really enjoyed getting to know and work with some of their staff.

Packaging options
Each box contains four diffusers, with 3 adjustment options for each.
Solution Benefits
Children and teachers in elementary school complain about how their lights are over powering and harsh. A light diffuser helps to adjust the light and emit it in an ambient way. One 2 x 4' fluorescent light without a diffuser emits 78 lux. I measured the light before and after using my diffuser, here are the numbers for each option within the product packaging.
Where to buy?
These cardboard light diffusers could be sold at home improvement stores such as Home Depot, Lowes, or Ace.
